Frank Outlaw founded BI-LO in the Upstate of South Carolina in 1961. In
the following years Mr. Outlaw’s chain of stores grew rapidly and
by 1977, when Ahold purchased BI-LO, there were 96 stores in the
Carolinas and Georgia. BI-LO was the first U.S. acquisition by Ahold.
The company continued to grow during
the '80's and '90's through new store development and acquisitions.
In 1989 BI-LO acquired 21 stores from Kroger in the Charlotte (NC)
and Charleston (SC) markets, and in 1994 added 54 Red Food Stores
headquartered in Chattanooga (TN). Today the chain is comprised
of 300 supermarkets operating under the BI-LO and Food$mart banners,
with locations in four states and employing approximately 27,000 associates.
BI-LO supermarkets can be found in
small towns, suburban neighborhoods and large urban areas. Advertising
is as diverse as the neighborhoods served by BI-LO, carefully targeted
to the community in which a store is located and to the preferences
of the customers served.
In January of 1997, BI-LO introduced
the BONUSCARD®, a frequent shopper card that has been a valuable
tool for the company. Understanding specific customer shopping patterns
helps in marketing to very targeted groups, such as moms, families and/or pet owners.
The BONUSCARD® also provides an opportunity to reward
loyal customers. Our marketing strategy includes strong emphasis on price
and service, along with a targeted comprehensive product assortment. Over
150 locations also have an in-store pharmacy, for additional customer convenience.
An important facet of the company for the past 20 years is the BI-LO Charity Classic golf
tournament. It has raised money for charities in all four states that we
operate and has grown to be the largest one-day charitable event in the
country. In its history, the BI-LO Charity Classic has raised nearly $20 million.
In addition, BI-LO and its associates donate more than $1 million annually to the United Way
campaigns in their trade area and has been honored for outstanding support
of the Muscular Dystrophy Shamrock Program. Each year BI-LO offers
scholarship opportunities in partnership with the Urban Leagues in several
cities. BI-LO’s philanthropy focuses on charities that assist children,
enhance education or help eliminate hunger.
